Consumer Alert: Possible Phishing Scam

It has been brought to our attention that some local residents have received the below text message from an unknown number:

(Direct Express Debit MasterCard) Call: 14079002634

When calling the number it states that your card has been limited and then prompts the caller to enter their entire card number.

This is what is typically called a Smishing scam where the perpetrator attempts to "blast" text messages to random numbers.  This is in an attempt to gain personal information such as card numbers.

What you should know:

  • You should not provide any infomation.  Farmers National Bank will never ask for information in this manner.
  • If the card infomation has already been disclosed:
    • The card needs to be closed immediately.  Please do so by calling the customer care number on the back of your debit card.
  • If other personal information was given, such as a social security number, do the following:
    • Place a fraud alert on your credit report with the three major credit bureaus:
      • Equifax: 1-888-766-0008
      • Experian: 1-888-397-3742
      • Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289
    • Close the accounts that you know or believe have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.
    • File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission:  http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/
    • File a report with local police
